More People, Less Jobs?…

The Nation reports a troubling set of statistics:

Total number of nonfarm private-sector jobs as of October 1999, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics: 109,487,000. Total number of nonfarm private-sector jobs as of October 2009: 108,401,000. Net difference: -1,086,000. Gain in US population from 1999 to 2009: 34,573,000.

Bottom line: over the last 10 years, the U.S. gained 34.5 million people but lost a net one million jobs.  This can not continue.  The U.S. must revitalize its manufacturing base and begin to generate new middle class jobs.
